Product Introduction
Excellent resolution and rich tonal expression. Approximately 10.1-megapixel proprietary CMOS sensor. A new image engine, DIGIC III, that performs high-definition and high-speed processing. High image quality of approximately 10.1 megapixels with high-speed continuous shooting at approximately 6.5 frames/second.
Equipped with approximately 10.1-megapixel CMOS sensor and high-performance image engine "DIGIC III"
- Newly developed approximately 10.1-megapixel CMOS sensor
Equipped with a proprietary large CMOS sensor (22.2 x 14.8mm: APS-C size) with approximately 10.1 effective megapixels (approximately 10.5 total megapixels). Improved light collection efficiency through improved on-chip microlenses, ensuring a standard ISO range of 100-1600 even with a smaller pixel size compared to the "EOS 30D." ISO 3200 can also be selected with ISO expansion, allowing for a wider range of subjects. Furthermore, by implementing thorough random noise reduction and fixed pattern noise removal with the second-generation on-chip noise reduction circuit, low noise is achieved even during high ISO sensitivity and long-exposure photography. Additionally, the automatic ISO setting range in easy shooting zones such as full auto and portrait modes has been expanded by one stop to 100-800 compared to previous models, and automatic ISO setting is now possible in advanced shooting zones such as shutter priority AE and aperture priority AE. In automatic setting, the ISO sensitivity is automatically set to achieve a shutter speed that prevents camera shake according to the brightness, and sensitivity is set according to the shooting mode. - High-performance image engine "DIGIC III"
Adopts the high-performance image engine "DIGIC III," which has the ability to process vast amounts of image data at high speed and with high precision, achieving both high-definition digital image processing and high-speed continuous shooting. In addition, the processing of converting analog signals output from the CMOS sensor into digital signals has been improved from 12-bit (4,096 gradations) in previous models to 14-bit (16,384 gradations), enabling more natural and richer tonal expression. Furthermore, noise reduction functions to reduce noise occurring during long-exposure shooting and high ISO sensitivity shooting can be set via custom functions.
Continuous shooting at up to approximately 6.5 frames/second, approximately 75 frames
With 4-channel high-speed signal readout from the CMOS sensor, high-speed image processing by "DIGIC III," and the adoption of a 2-motor system, the "EOS 40D" has improved continuous shooting performance to up to approximately 6.5 frames/second*1 compared to previous models. It is also possible to switch between "high-speed continuous shooting" at up to approximately 6.5 frames/second and "low-speed continuous shooting" at up to approximately 3 frames/second according to shooting needs. The number of continuous shots has improved from approximately 30 frames to approximately 75 frames*2 for JPEG (large/fine) images and from approximately 11 frames to approximately 17 frames*2 for RAW images due to improvements in the development processing sequence. *1 Varies depending on shooting conditions. *2 When using a Canon standard CF card, during high-speed continuous shooting.
9-point AF with high-precision cross-type metering at all points
Cross-type metering sensors, capable of detecting both vertical and horizontal lines of a subject, are arranged at all 9 metering points. This allows for highly accurate detection, achieving excellent focusing with few difficult subjects. For the first time in the EOS series, the center metering point is equipped with a sensor capable of detecting vertical and horizontal lines compatible with F2.8, enabling more precise focusing. It also features a large defocus compatible sensor that can quickly focus even from a significantly out-of-focus state.
Newly designed high-performance viewfinder with approximately 0.95x magnification
Equipped with a newly designed viewfinder with approximately 0.95x magnification (26.4° field of view) and 95% field of view. The eye-point has also been extended to 22mm, significantly improving visibility.
Further improved reliability - EOS DIGITAL's comprehensive sensor dust countermeasures "EOS Integrated Cleaning System"
"EOS Integrated Cleaning System (EOS I.C.S.)" is Canon's comprehensive approach to sensor dust, which is unique to digital SLR cameras. Focusing on the entire process from dust generation to adhesion and removal, various measures have been implemented. - Shutter with approximately 100,000 actuations durability and maximum 1/8000 second high-speed
Equipped with a high-performance shutter unit with a maximum speed of 1/8000 second and a flash sync speed of 1/250 second. It controls exposure from 1/8000 second to 30 seconds and has cleared approximately 100,000 actuation durability tests, ensuring high reliability. - High rigidity due to magnesium alloy exterior
Magnesium alloy is used for the main exterior covers. The body is finished with a high-grade black satin-textured matte coating and a Canon logo on the front with engraved-style characters, creating a luxurious image while providing high rigidity. - Improved dust and drip resistance
Dust and drip resistance has been improved by applying sealing to the CF card slot cover and battery compartment lid.
Improved information display and operability - 3.0-inch large LCD monitor with improved visibility
Equipped with a 3.0-inch, approximately 230,000-dot LCD monitor. Menu display characters are made larger and easier to see, and visibility is improved with a wide viewing angle. In addition, improved maximum brightness makes it effective for use outdoors in bright conditions. Furthermore, expanding the color reproduction range achieves more natural image display. - Enhanced in-viewfinder information display
ISO sensitivity has been added to the in-viewfinder information display. Even in automatic setting, the ISO value is displayed. "B/W" display now lights up during monochrome shooting, and the number of continuous shots available has been improved from a single digit to a two-digit display, allowing for more accurate tracking of the remaining number of shots. - Camera function settings via LCD monitor
Settings such as shutter speed and aperture can now be confirmed on the 3.0-inch large LCD monitor. This is convenient when shooting from a high position using a tripod, etc., where the viewfinder or top display panel cannot be seen.
Live View shooting function that expands shooting style - Live View shooting function
Equipped with a Live View shooting function that allows shooting while checking real-time footage from the CMOS sensor on the camera's LCD monitor. You can frame, focus, and check exposure while viewing the real-time footage. This is highly effective for macro photography using a tripod. Live View shooting allows for a display with approximately 100% field of view. You can also zoom in 5x/10x for precise focusing. Various displays are possible, such as a grid line to check horizontal and vertical tilt, and display at a brightness corresponding to exposure settings such as shutter speed and aperture. Furthermore, by using the bundled software "EOS Utility," you can also perform remote Live View shooting while checking the subject's composition and focus in real time on a computer display. - Silent shooting mode
During Live View shooting, the camera is set to a mode that suppresses operating noise compared to normal shooting, making it effective for shooting in situations where noise needs to be suppressed, such as concerts and stage performances. It is also possible to set a mode that minimizes operating noise at the moment of shooting by not charging the shutter until the shutter button is released. - AF function during Live View shooting
The AF function during Live View shooting has been added to custom functions. Pressing the AF-ON button during Live View shooting temporarily interrupts Live View shooting and performs AF.
Supports various shooting styles - Interchangeable focusing screens
In addition to the standard focusing screen, two types of optional focusing screens are available. The grid type "Ef-D" is convenient for determining composition, such as checking the horizontal and vertical lines of the subject. The "Ef-S" focusing screen, which makes it easy to grasp the focus peak, is effective for manual focusing when using lenses brighter than F2.8. - My Menu function
